Tumba Primary School established a 1-hectare food and supermarket garden in 2018 with the support of funding from the UNDP Small Grant Project. The garden has 14 members, 8 women, and 6 men.
The supermarket garden has become a beacon of hope for those in need. The well-run supermarket garden by youths in that area, has not only been serving the nourishing the diet of the school learners and subsidizing income of young people, but also acting as a food provider for those in need, the elderly and people living with disabilities.
One of the youth, Merjury Mapolisa, narrated how they have been donating some of the products to those in need. It’s an act that she described as fulfilling and it’s something that the other youths she works with have vowed to keep doing. Some of the products donated are tomatoes, rape, and sweet potatoes.
